Grand Slam Down Under: The Thrilling Australian Open!
By Maria Antsifrova
Hi! Today I am going to tell you about the key and the most memorable moments of a tennis tournament Australian Open 2024, which was happening in Melbourne from January 14th until January 28th.
As you all know, the men's singles winner is an Italian tennis player, Jannik Sinner. He is also the first Italian in history to reach the Australian Open final. He also won the Grand Slam tournament for the first time. Unlike the women's singles winner, Aryna Sabalenka, from Belarus. She has already won the Grand Slam tournament before, in 2023. We also have winners in women's doubles, the duo of Hsieh Su-wei and Elise Mertens, and also men's doubles, Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden. It was Bopanna's first major title in doubles, and Ebden's second. Bopanna became the oldest man in the Open Era to win a major title.
The most memorable matches of the Australian Open 2024 were mostly women's singles, for example Iga Swiatek beating Danielle Collins and Anna Blinkova beating Elena. Also the round of 16 at Australian Open 2024 featured some of the best match-ups of the tournament.
These matches were particularly noteworthy for their competitiveness and the quality of tennis displayed by the players. Another key moment is that the tournament also featured the first-round matches taking place over three days instead of two and a revamped ticketing system introduced by Tennis Australia. Additionally, the event saw remarkable performances from players like Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz. These moments and achievements contributed to making the 2024 Australian Open a memorable and significant event in the tennis calendar.
Let's talk about something tennis articles usually don't talk about and combine outfits with sport, the fashion in tennis. For some reason, Aryna Sabalenka received a special honor in Melbourne to wear a different color of the Tennis Nike dress from her final match.
The company made one red dress instead of the usual colour scheme for everybody else, and Sabalenka got to wear it. She was asked about it following her most recent win over Amanda Anisimova, and she confirmed that it wasn't something she initiated or was even part of the process, but she's happy to have been offered to wear a different dress. She was also wearing Nike Zoom Court NXT HC tennis shoes, which were matching with the red dress.
But what about men's fashion? Our other winner, Jannik Sinner was also wearing Nike, because he is also being sponsored by the company, just like Aryna Sabalenka. Jannik was wearing a unique design on court at the 2024 Australian Open. The shirt is known as the Nike Men's Spring Slam Crew, and is available for purchase by anyone who wants to wear it. Sinner was also still wearing his Nike Zoom Zero tennis shoes, which were discontinued years ago, although he did wear his Gucci shoes before the trophy presentation, in order to promote his sponsors. Nevertheless, he ended up playing in his Nikes the entire time. I would love to tell you more about the fashion in tennis and what the players were wearing, but since there were 32 players, I won't be able to talk about each one's outfit in 4 detail!
