Eco-Dreams:
Green School
This year our School Executives have decided to make H-Farm a part of the Eco-Schools programme.
The Eco-Schools Programme aims to allow students to understand the importance of the Environment, and teach us environmental management, to ensure a better tomorrow. To make a change for a sustainable future.
The Eco-Schools program engages almost 70 countries, almost 60 thousand schools, and over 20 million students. Joining the programme makes us the first school in the Venetian region to aim to be an Eco-School.
Long-term commitment from school leaders, the official school board, and staff members is necessary for successfully completing the seven-step framework of the eco-schools, something centred around their "eco-schools themes". This will earn us the esteemed Green Flag representing the commitment and want to strive onward for betterment.
But what are the seven steps?
Form an Eco Committee.
The first step is to create a student-led " Eco Committee". This means that Class representatives and a few others who wish to be a part of this journey will ensure that we as a school go through with this project in theme with one of the "eco-school themes".
Carry out a Sustainability Audit.
The Second step is to select an eco-school theme. This theme will be selected in the audit to decide what the programme will focus on for the year.
Link to the Curriculum.
The idea behind this step is to get teachers to make this theme a part of their lessons. Include it in their teaching (e.g. if we decide to make food our eco–school theme the chemistry teacher could teach students how to turn leftover food into manure to plant plants on school grounds).
The Action Plan.
The action plan is based on setting SMART goals. It will distribute work equally among members of the committee, as well as school staff in order to ensure we can reach our goals.
Implementation, Monitoring, and Evaluation.
The students who have taken part in the Eco-Schools programme will have to regularly check that their plan is working properly, should something have come up, it is up to them to fix it and get back on track.
Inform and Involve.
Maye the most unique step, is to involve the community outside of the school, to make sure the public is also aware of the importance of these themes, what the eco-school programme is about, and what can be done to help.
Produce an Eco Code.
Lastly, the school body must come up with a statement, slogan, song, or poem to describe the school's commitment.
Once all of these steps are walked, an official assessor will come to validate the school's progress, and if we have met their standards, we will be awarded the green flag, a symbol that shows our strive to move forward and advance as a community in the fight to save our planet.
This Service Action will be extremely beneficial for all students, and it is highly recommended you take part in it for both the learning experience and credit. The amazing thing about this project is that it is not limited to middle school and high school students, PYP1 through DP1 all have an equally important part in making sure we achieve this gritty milestone. We as students are beyond lucky to have such an amazing campus, board, and teachers who care about us and our education on the environment, so it is important we contribute to show our gratitude and how much we want to be involved in this fight.
